Student Community Services

Days of Service

The Community CENTER sponsors Days of Service during the academic year. These events are one day opportunities for students and community members to engage in service that benefits their community.

National Days of Service are annual events across the country that mobilize people to do public service. Several national service days have been established to encourage people to become involved in helping their communities and expose them to ongoing volunteer opportunities.

Cal Poly participates in the following National Days of Service: Make a Difference Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of service, and Cesar Chavez Day of Service. If you are interested in participating in a Day of Service, please contact Student Community Services at scs@calpoly.edu or call (805) 756-5834.

What is Make a Difference Day?

On Saturday, October 24, 2009 individuals and groups in San Luis Obispo County are invited to come together in the spirit of community and volunteerism to lend a hand to local nonprofit agencies as a part of Make a Difference Day.

Everyone can participate! Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, Make a Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. Millions have participated all over the country. Anyone can carry out a volunteer project that helps others, it might be as ambitious as collecting truckloads of clothing for the homeless, or as personal as spending an afternoon helping an elderly neighbor or relative. In 2008, 3 million people supported their communities by volunteering and accomplishing thousands of projects all over the nation.

Make a Difference Day in San Luis Obispo County

Make a Difference Day is recognized nationally and organized locally by the Community CENTER at Cal Poly and co-sponsored by United Way of San Luis Obispo County. It is one of San Luis Obispo County’s largest single-day volunteer events. Participants will be placed at over 30 different non-profit agencies throughout the County to help with projects ranging from gardening and painting to special events and fundraisers.

Last year over 25 Make a Difference Day projects were scheduled with organizations such as United Cerebral Palsy, One Cool Earth, SLO County Historical Society, SLO Botanical Garden, the Alzheimer’s Association, and the Food Bank Coalition of SLO County, among many others. Over 400 community members and college students from all over the county participated in the event.
