What WOW is to New Students
The Week of Welcome Orientation Program (WOW) is one of the largest volunteer orientation
programs in the country. Each year, approximately five to six hundred trained student leaders welcome freshmen and transfer
students to the campus and San Luis Obispo community. This is a drug- and alcohol-free program that focuses on academics, community
awareness, social issues, on- and off-campus resources, and forming connections with other students. It is an effective tool for a
successful transition into the university experience.
What WOW is to Families
WOW welcomes new students and their families to the Cal Poly campus. Families
have their own questions and concerns when leaving their new students, and the WOW program
wants to try and help answer those questions by providing resources, sessions, and one-on-one
interaction with current students, staff and faculty.
Family Orientation Weekend
September 13 & 14, 2007
The weekend before New Student Orientation consists of programming for families and
supporters of new Cal Poly students. Programming is designed to prepare new Cal Poly parents and
supporters for their role in facilitating a successful transition for their students.
Highlights include President's Welcome, Family BBQ, Resource Faire, parent-centered
publications, and workshops and presentations by various on-campus resources. For more
information go to Family Orientation Highlights. A more
detailed version of the schedule will be available on this page at the end of August.
New Student Orientation
September 15-19, 2007
During this week-long program held prior to fall classes beginning, students are placed in small
groups led by two trained orientation leaders. They are introduced to life at Cal Poly and in
San Luis Obispo through a full range of activities, including: WOW-a-RAMA (mingle with
the 3000 other WOW participants), SLO Bound (check out everything SLO has to offer), College
Connections: Academic Success (become familiar with their college and department), Awareness
presentations (discuss social issues with other students), and Block Party (experience dozens of
Cal Poly's clubs). For more information about the activities during the week go to
New Student Orientation Highlights. A more
detailed version of the schedule will be available on this page at the end of August.
Leaders
Orientation leaders have been trained for over 40 hours in preparation for leading their “WOW”
groups. They have all signed a contract and are excited to help your new student
transition successfully to Cal Poly.
