Change the Status Quo is a two day
conference focusing on a student's role in
shaping society. Come learn about the
history of activism at Cal Poly as students
coordinators of the Strive and Struggle Exhibit
present their findings! Strive and Struggle: A
Lesson on Student Activism from the Civil Rights
Movement at Cal Poly.
The presentation/workshop will highlight the
successful student movement at Cal Poly in the
late 1960s. These students, despite their small
numbers, demanded change from the campus
administration and their community. Student
activism allowed these students to reshape their
experience at Cal Poly and successfully
implement programs that addressed the needs of a
diverse student body. We will focus on the
history of the movement at Cal Poly, placing it
in the historical context of movements
throughout the nation and the state, discuss why
these students were successful, and how students
today can apply the lessons of these courageous
young students to their own challenges.
Design students will also be in attendance to
share their vision of how
the exhibit was designed to reflect the spirit
of the time period.
We will also provide a brief overview of
resources used to develop the exhibit
and where students/campus community can access
these resources.
